Coleman Michael Pickell, a 23-year-old former walk-on water polo coach for University High School in Irvine, has been sentenced to four years of probation and 15 days of community service in lieu of jail time for having sex with a 17-year-old student, according to the O.C. Register.
Pickell, an Irvine resident, was arrested in October and charged with six felony counts including unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. He pleaded guilty to one felony count of sexual intercourse with a minor who is three years younger than the perpetrator, on Monday, April 17.
Pickell’s plea bargain saved him from serving up to six years in prison, according to the OCDA.
Pickell was a junior varsity boys water polo coach and volunteered as a swim coach at University High, where he met the victim, back in the summer of 2015.
Pickell contacted his victim and then engaged in sex acts with her on several occasions in September of 2016. He then he took her to a hotel room where her parents found her the next morning. They then called the police.
After his arrest, he was quickly dismissed from the school. He was not a faculty member.
