Mayor Steven Choi Outraises All Opponents in 68th Assembly District Race
Orange County, CA – Mayor Steven Choi continues to outpace all other candidates in the race for the 68th Assembly District with his combination of strong fundraising and efficient spending.
Mayor Choi is the local choice of Orange County voters. Choi has more endorsements from Orange County mayors and city councilmembers than all other candidates in the 68th Assembly District combined. With Irvine’s large electorate and tiny $440 campaign contribution limit, Choi has built a large grassroots donor base to raise $125,000 for mayor within the city’s low limits. With the far higher campaign contribution limit for Assembly, Mayor Choi’s grassroots donor base along with his local endorsements makes Choi the local frontrunner for the 68th Assembly District.
As the Orange County Register noted in February, “Irvine mayor leads Assembly District 68 fundraising,” with Mayor Choi raising $157,971 in 2015, Harry Sidhu raising $92,874, and all other candidates reporting less than $25,000 raised. Subtracting out personal loans, Mayor Choi had $155,112.59 cash-on-hand while Sidhu had $134,280.51 cash-on-hand.
Mayor Choi and School Board Member Alexia Deligianni-Brydges are the only current elected officials in the field of five Republicans, one Democrat, and one No Party Preference candidate. Irvine Mayor Choi is the sole candidate from the southern half of the 68th Assembly District, with the remainder of the field consisting of four Anaheim Hills residents, Deligianni-Brydges of Orange, and Deborah Pauly of Villa Park.
Choi, who as a Councilman narrowly lost the 2010 primary to now-Assembly Member Don Wagner, was elected Mayor of Irvine in 2012 and re-elected in 2014. Choi’s election made him the first Republican mayor in a dozen years, and his victory also delivered the first Republican majority in as many years in one of Orange County’s largest cities. Prior to his two terms as Mayor, Choi served two terms on the City Council and two terms on the School Board.
