Irvine Ranch Conservancy Receives AmeriCorps NCCC members for the First Time
Irvine, Calif. – It may have been April Fool’s Day, but the arrival of an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team is no joke. Starting April 1st, 2015 a seven person AmeriCorps NCCC team, known as Green Three, arrived in Irvine to work with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy.
The Irvine Ranch Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that protects approximately 40,000 acres of land with a rare Mediterranean climate that is slowly disappearing. This land is home to a biologically diverse array of native plants and animals.
Green Three will have the opportunity to assist in the eradication of invasive species of plants, allowing native plants in the space to thrive. The team will also be involved in germination and propagation of species native to this area.
Team member, Jade Francis, explains “with so much habitat encroached upon by development and human interference, it is important to allow a space for the native species to reside so they do not disappear entirely.”
The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
