Consumer advocacy site, NerdWallet was curious to reassess which Southern California places were the best for young families, examining public school rating, median home value, monthly home ownership costs, median household income and income growth. The results of their second annual study revealed that Irvine ranks #1 on their list with a GreatSchool rating of 10 and a median home value of $646,500 in 2012.
A few interesting takeaways:
- Smaller is better. Six of the top 10 cities occupy less than 15 square miles of land, but they have strategic locations in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
- From the OC to LA: Moving down the list, Los Angeles County isn’t far behind its neighbor with six cities in our top 20.
- Top cities tend to be inland, not coastal. Only one of the top 10 locations was directly on the coast, but many others are located only a short drive to the beach.
