IRVINE, CA (October 23, 2014): Veterans Day is a time to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and commitment to serve and sacrifice for the common good. In honor of our veterans and in support of their families, the City of Irvine is hosting two Veterans Day events:
Northwood Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony
On Sunday, November 9, in partnership with the Northwood Memorial Committee, a special candle lighting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial to pay tribute to our nation’s troops – past and present – and to honor local veterans, veterans groups and military organizations. Please bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The Northwood Memorial is located at 4531 Bryan Avenue, Irvine.
On Tuesday, November 11, the City of Irvine will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park, 4 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine.
In addition to saluting our nation’s military at the 11 a.m. event November 11, community members can pre-order dedication flags to honor a current or past service member through the Irvine Chamber Education Foundation Field of Flags fundraiser. Flags purchased will be displayed in a Field of Flags with the service member’s photo and dedication card at the Veterans Day Ceremony. Proceeds raised from the purchase of flags will benefit the Lt. Col. Thomas Wall Scholarship fund and other education scholarships awarded to service men and women through the Education Foundation. For additional event information or to participate in the Field of Flags fundraiser, visit the Chamber’s special page: irvinechamber.com/advocacy/field-of-flags/,
Both events are free and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the Veterans Day Ceremony will move to the Irvine Civic Center located adjacent to the park. For more information, call 949-724-6606.
