Cold Case Investigation Results in Murder Conviction
SANTA ANA, Calif. – (October 1, 2014) – On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, Paul Marshal Curry, 57, Salina KS, was found guilty by a jury of poisoning his wife of two years, Linda Curry.
On June 9, 1994 Curry, who then lived in San Clemente, CA, used nicotine to poison his wife before calling 911. Deputies responded to the scene and took Linda Curry to the hospital where she later died. Paul Curry was a suspect, having collected over $500,000 from his wife’s insurance policy, but the case went cold.
In 2002 while assigned to the Homicide Detail, Orange County Sheriff’s Investigator Shull reopened the case and began following up on information from 1994. Investigator Shull continued working the case as she progressed through various assignments. In 2006, as the Homicide Detail Sergeant, Sergeant Shull presented the case to the Orange County District Attorney’s (OCDA) Office; however, the OCDA requested additional follow up and investigation. In November 2010, Sergeant Shull and Investigator Hoffman travelled to Salina, KS to interview Curry resulting in his arrest for the murder of his wife. Investigators continued to work with the D.A.’s office until the trial began on September 2, 2014.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between now Retired Sergeant Shull, numerous Sheriff’s investigators, Crime Lab Division, Coroner Division and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. The case was successfully prosecuted by the OCDA based on the hard work, tenacity and persistence of Sheriff’s Department personnel.
Curry was convicted of one felony count of special circumstances murder for financial gain with a sentencing enhancement for murder by poisoning. He faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
