Orange County Trial Lawyers Association Awards Dinner to Benefit Veterans; Honor Judge Wendy Lindley
On Saturday, November 23, 2013, the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association (OCTLA) is hosting a silent and live auction – all of the proceeds from which will benefit Operation Veterans Re-Entry, a program of the Public Law Center aimed at helping military veterans overcome legal obstacles as they re-enter civilian life. Over the past 10 years, OCTLA has raised more than $300,000 to benefit non-profit charities in Orange County.
Operation Veterans Re-Entry honors the legacy of Captain Matthew Patrick Manoukian, United States Marine Corps, 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, who was killed in combat August 10, 2012 in Sangin District, Afghanistan. An Orange County native, Captain Manoukian had been accepted to law school and planned to begin law studies after returning from Afghanistan. He had planned to enter public service as a public defender – inspired to enter the legal profession by his parents, both of whom are judges.
OCTLA will also recognize Judge Wendy Lindley, who will be retiring this year after a distinguished career on the Orange County Superior Court bench. Judge Lindley created and fostered collaborative courts such as the Homeless Outreach Court, Drug Court and Combat Veterans Court. Her vision and dedication created alternative court models that drastically reduced recidivism and saved taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.
In addition to raising funds for a worthwhile cause and honoring a judicial star, OCTLA will be honoring five consumer advocates as “Top Gun” trial lawyers of the year: Theresa J. Barta – Business Litigation; John C. Adams III – Medical Malpractice; Steven R. Young – Class Action; Gregory L. Bentley – Government Entity; and William D. Shapiro – Personal Injury.
Widely recognized as one of the pre-eminent legal gatherings in the state, this year’s event will be held at the Montage in Laguna Beach. The silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. with the dinner, program and live auction.
