Often, community members find they have firearms they no longer have a desire to safeguard but do not have a place or plan to safely dispose of them. The Irvine Police Department has had a long standing policy to receive unwanted firearms at any time from members of the public and to facilitate their safe destruction. The process is simple. Call the police department to arrange a convenient time. An officer will meet you at the police station or at your home to take possession of the firearms. Very brief information is taken, which will include a signature stating you no longer have interest in the property and you give the Irvine Police Department permission to have the weapon destroyed.
This free service is intended to enhance safety in our community by preventing unwanted firearms from finding their way into the wrong hands. If you own a firearm, its safe storage is one of your most important responsibilities. You must always secure your firearm and ammunition so they are not accessible to children or other unauthorized persons. For more information, contact the Irvine Police Department at 949-724-7000.
