City of Irvine, Press Release
For Immediate Release
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO will open to the public at 2:30 p.m. today, 3 ½ hours after high winds forced the temporary closure of the event at the Orange County Great Park.
U.S. Department of Energy, City of Irvine and city public safety officials had made the decision not to open as scheduled shortly before 11 a.m. today and reassessed wind conditions in the early afternoon.
Santa Ana winds are blowing throughout the Southern California region, but began easing around 1 p.m. Organizers will closely monitor wind conditions throughout the weekend to ensure a safe event environment. The free public event is expected to be open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Today’s late opening prompted the cancellation of the speakers program that was focused on a special Municipal Day. The Discovery Science Center’s exhibit also remains closed for the day.
The competition contests and scoring continue without interruption. Visit SolarDecathlon.gov/scores.html to track the leaders.
