On Tuesday, April 9, 2013, motor officer Michael Wright received the Officer of the Quarter award at a luncheon hosted by the Irvine Exchange Club at the Marriott Hotel. Chief Maggard, Deputy Chief Hamel, Lieutenant Hallinan and Sergeant Frank Andersen were in attendance to congratulate Officer Walsh. Today’s award luncheon was originally scheduled in February but was postponed due to a large-scale homicide investigation.
Although nominated for his recent work, Officer Wright has been a consistently outstanding employee in the traffic unit for the past four years. He is referred to as an informal leader in the unit, often taking on tasks such as training and other projects to enhance the quality of the unit without even being asked.
During the last quarter of 2012, Officer Wright conducted in-service training for other motor officers and assisted with trainings for the Seal Beach and Laguna Beach police departments. Additionally, he trained an individual Laguna Beach motor trainee and presented training to patrol officers on issues related to traffic enforcement and court testimony. Officer Wright also takes a lead role in the coordination of the many grant related enforcement activities including coordinating DUI checkpoints.
Recently, Officer Wright was presented with a challenging assignment, the development of a juvenile diversion program for youthful bicycle offenders. As a component of a the comprehensive “Safe Routes to Schools” grant, the program, once implemented will provide an opportunity for local youth to not only avoid the costly penalties of formal fines, but also learn potentially life-saving bicycle safety skills.
Officer Wright joined the Irvine Police Department in 2007. Prior to Irvine, he worked as a police officer at the Tustin Police Department and as a Deputy Sheriff for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Chapman University. Prior awards include a 2004 Lifesaving Medal awarded by the Tustin Police Department.
Congratulations Officer Wright!
