Presented by UC Irvine School of Law and Fish & Tsang, more than 50 distinguished community leaders welcomed class of 2017 UCI law students to celebrate the vibrancy of Orange County and the work of legal community.

Event speakers included partners Bob Fish and Mei Tsang, UC Irvine Assistant Dean Janice Austin, UCI Chief of Police Paul Henisey and Orange County Bar Association’s Todd Friedland. Feature: Recent graduate helps prepare First Amendment case for Supreme Court review

Selwyn Chu graduated from UC Irvine School of Law only a year ago, but he is already working on a case going before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case, a First Amendment issue involving a protester arrested at an Air Force base near Santa Barbara, was granted certiorari on June 3, 2013, and could be argued at the Supreme Court before the end of the year.

With Chu’s help, Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, Distinguished Professor and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, will file the briefs and argue the case, which grew out the law school’s clinical education program. Continue reading→

Deadline Approaches for Claims Under Orange County’s General Relief Program

IRVINE, Calif., April 9, 2013–Past applicants and recipients of Orange County’s General Relief program have only four weeks left – to May 8– to make a claim under a consent decree in Mankinen v. County of Orange.

General Relief is cash aid of last resort for people who have exhausted all other support, and eligible individuals are frequently homeless persons and persons with disabilities. About 20,000 people are eligible to make claims under the Mankinen consent decree–which revises county standards and procedures for General relief–because they applied for or received aid from the county between Aug. 24, 2010, and Dec. 4, 2012. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky Named Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 26, 2013—Dean Erwin Chemerinsky has been named to a new endowed chair in First Amendment Law at UC Irvine School of Law.

The chair was established by a $1.5 million gift last year from Raymond Pryke, owner and publisher of Valleywide Newspapers, based in the High Desert community of Hesperia, Calif. Continue reading→
