Spitzer Commends the Irvine City Council for Continuing to Negotiate with Great Park Developer

(IRVINE, CA) The Irvine City Council voted unanimously at its Sept. 10 meeting to enter into final negotiations with a developer who has offered to develop nearly 700 acres of the Great Park.

The developer, FivePoint Communities, has offered to build more than 4,600 homes, sports fields, a public golf course, nature trails and a wildlife corridor. The builder would spend $174 million. Continue reading→

Irvine Council votes for developer’s proposal to finally build the Great Park

The Irvine City Council net tonight to discuss and vote on a development plan at the Great Park put forth by Five Point Communities. The proposal has been described as imperfect but it was approved by the Council on a 5-0 vote.

Irvine City Commissioner Allan Bartlett reacted to the vote on Facebook, “Irvine Republicans have kept their promise to finally start the real building of the Great Park in Irvine. Larry and Beth had 12 years to do this. They failed miserably and wasted over $200 million in the process.” Continue reading→

In this week’s big news Irvine City Council Members Christina Shea have split up and Shea is now apparently allying with Democratic Council Members Beth Krom and Larry Agran. One of the issues that has contributed to the split is the Great Park.

Irvine Finance Commissioner Allan Bartlett, a Shea appointee, said on his Facebook page today that one of the reasons that the Republicans won in last year’s Council elections was that they promised to finish building the Great Park – although Krom and Agran have squandered millions of dollars on plans that will never be used and public relations consultants. NEWS FROM THE GREAT PARK

During my campaign for Mayor, I repeatedly stated my belief that the Great Park needs some important changes. I am very pleased that Councilmembers Jeff Lalloway and Christina Shea share this view, and we have been very busy. You may have read about some of these changes already.

First, we reduced the size of the Great Park Board of Directors, from nine members to five, and those five are the City Councilmembers. With the State’s recent dissolution of all redevelopment agencies, responsibility for the Great Park now rests solely with the City of Irvine, and I believe that all Board members should be directly accountable to our citizens. That was not the case with the larger Board. While the other four Directors were good people, they live in Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach and Santa Ana, whose residents have nothing at stake and nothing to lose. Continue reading→

Wouldn’t you think if the Solar Decathlon was such a good idea that the Obama Misadministration might want to hold it in a northern State during winter? If solar technology is such a great advance for residential housing as they use this event to tout, what better way to prove it by heating homes and generating power where and when it’s most needed?
