Irvine Lake Drowning Victim Located by Dive Team Identified
SILVERADO CANYON, Calif. (August 23, 2015) – On Sunday, August 23, 2015, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Team located the deceased body of Clarence William Brumfield, 61, Palmdale, in Irvine Lake approximately 25 feet below the surface, near where he was seen falling overboard from his fishing boat into the water.
Brumfield’s fishing companion indicated neither he nor Brumfield were wearing life preservers when he we witnessed Brumfield fall overboard into the water. The fishing companion immediately jumped in after Brumfield but was unsuccessful in locating him before summoning an emergency response from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Authority.
On Saturday, August 22, 2015 at approximately 5:45 P.M., a coordinated mutual response by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies and the Orange County Fire Authority initiated a search and rescue mission for the missing fisherman. Orange County Fire Authority dispatched three swift water rescue teams, aided by the Sheriff’s Department airship “Duke,” to begin an immediate surface level search during daylight hours. After several hours of active searching by firefighters and deputies, Brumfield was presumed deceased and the operation transitioned to a recovery mission. Sheriff’s divers entered the water and searched until shortly after midnight before halting the search due to diminished underwater visibility and lack of sunlight.
On Sunday, August 23, 2015, Sheriff’s divers resumed their search efforts and at approximately 11:15 a.m., located Brumfield. The body was recovered by divers and Coroner Division investigators responded to conduct the preliminary death investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for this week to confirm any existence of a pre-existing medical condition and cause of death.
