At Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s press conference yesterday at Irvine City Hall, I had the opportunity to speak about Irvine’s successful Social Host Ordinance which discourages adults from allowing underage drinking in their homes.
Below is an excerpt from an Orange County Register article in which I’m quoted:
Since Irvine adopted the law in 2011, Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Lalloway said the Irvine Police Department has issued 16 citations for violations, none of which, he added, have been appealed.
“As someone who believes in limited government, I’m very sensitive about laws that expand the reach of law enforcement,” Lalloway said. “But I know the social host ordinance is not overreaching; it merely allows our police to enforce the laws that are already on the books, the laws against underage drinking.”
