I have asked for an item to be placed on tonight’s City Council agenda that will enable us to have greater transparency in our city government.
Under California state law, various campaign documents and forms disclosing financial conflicts of information are required to be filed with the City of Irvine.
Currently if a member of the public would like to review these documents, they must come to city hall and request physical copies of them. Transparency in government is a critical component to being held accountable to the citizens that we represent. These documents should be available on the City of Irvine’s website.
Therefore, I am proposing that the City Council direct city staff to prepare a proposal for making these documents available to the public via the City of Irvine website. Specifically, I would like the staff to include the following when crafting a proposal for Council review and adoption:
The following shall be available on the City of Irvine website:
• All campaign filings that are filed with the City Clerk
• All statements of economic interests that are filed with or by the City Clerk to include candidates for City Council, City Council members, employees and contractors to the city
