IRVINE, CA (April 29, 2013): A full road closure will be in effect on Sand Canyon Avenue near the I-5 from 8 p.m. Friday, May 10 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 20.
I-5 on-ramps and off-ramps will remain OPEN during this period for traffic traveling to the Orange County Great Park or points further north along Sand Canyon toward Trabuco Road, Irvine Boulevard and beyond. I-5 traffic also can visit Old Town Irvine businesses, which remain open at Burt Road during this period.
Work continues on the Sand Canyon Undercrossing Project, which when completed in 2014 will allow traffic to move freely below the railroad tracks. During this period of full road closure of Sand Canyon Avenue between Burt Road and Oak Canyon/Laguna Canyon Road, detours have been mapped for local businesses and visitors. For those who use the I-5 in either direction with the intent to travel south along Sand Canyon Avenue, or who drive up Sand Canyon from the 405 Freeway area: The major thoroughfares of Jeffrey Road and Irvine Center Drive will provide the most convenient alternatives. Click here for the detour map. Information: 855-777-SAND or cityofirvine.org/sandcanyon.
For bicyclists, all detour surface roads provide on-street bike lanes to accommodate traffic during the full road closure.
