The unions lined up to attack John Moorlach in the Special Election for the 37th State Senate District – and they were joined by loathsome lobbyist Curt Pringle and a slew of special interests. But Moorlach prevailed tonight, edging out the union-backed Don Wagner with 50.4% of the vote, as per the O.C. Voter Registrar.
In the end Moorlach garnered 34,208 votes and Wagner netted 29,987 votes. The other candidates, Naz Namazi and write-in Democrat Louise Stewardson, didn’t matter as they combined for about 3,700 votes total.
What sunk Wagner despite his huge union-backed campaign war chest? I think it was his negativity and outright lies about Moorlach. Wagner has accomplished almost nothing in his political career. He was a goofy Community College Trustee before he won a seat in the State Assembly. Moorlach predicted the O.C. bankruptcy and helped to clean up the mess left by former OC Treasurer and Tax Collector Bob Citron and the lame Republican Supervisors who aided and abetted him.
There are a lot of equally lame Republicans who are surely sorry that their boy Wagner lost. Time for them to get over it. Moorlach will be awesome in Sacramento where I fully expect him to set the Democrats and the RINOs straight.
Congratulations to Moorlach and to his amazing campaign staff, particularly Deborah Pauly. She outworked the Wagner hacks and I applaud her for doing so.
